These BonBons aren’t for SnobSnobs
Posted by Melissa Bell
Sitting Around Eating BonBons is a modest little storefront that produces a not-so-modest product. By that I mean the owner/operator/chocolatier, Trish Kooger-Brown, is offering incredible value for her wares; $2 for a high-end chocolate truffle isn’t really considered a lot to pay these days – but Trish’s creations, her “bonbons”, are nearly the size of golf balls. And knowing she uses quality organic and fair trade chocolate makes them even more attractive to the serious and socially aware chocoholic.
“Using fair trade product was important to me,” Trish explains. “And I also really wanted to go organic with this. A lot of suppliers will say they’re organic, but they’re really not. I requested certificates.”
Upon sampling, I really can’t say I could tell that the chocolate was certified organic, but it sure as heck wasn’t Hershey’s. Trish makes all of her own bonbons (a four-pack is $8), fudge ($3 to $4 for a generous “slice”), chocolate barks ($8 per bag) and a few other treats on the premises, including a large maple sugar “loaf” ($8).
Operating on-line for the past couple of years, and having explored the rent-a-kitchen option in an effort to expand her business, Trish decided she was ready to take the big step of opening her own space in a high traffic area. So now folks can walk in off the street – and they do – lured by the siren scent of chocolate as the front door opens and closes throughout the business day.
Sticking to a basic flavour repertoire – no chai-spice or ginger pumpkin here - the giant bonbon goodness comes in a super-chocolatey “plain”, coconut, strawberry, chocolate-orange, and espresso. Fudge is available in macaroon, mint, and one for nut-lovers that is chock full of pecans, almonds, and walnuts. Barks include “Cranberry Delight” and “Chunky Monkey”.
Unpretentious and providing excellent value for the chocolate-destined dollar, Sitting Around Eating Bonbons should be considered a welcome little addition to the south Etobicoke neighbourhood. Trish thinks so, too. “Who’s my audience?” she asks, with a laugh. “Just the regular foodie who enjoys flavour on a more advanced level.”
